Producer/Director Ann Shin will be speaking at Doc Toronto’s Conference on Alternative Film Financing this Saturday, February 25, at the National Film Board of Canada’s Atelier. She’ll be on a panel with filmmakers from Within Every Woman and Indie Game discussing the different kinds of financing scenarios available to filmmakers today. Our line producer Heidi Tao Yang has won the highly competitive WIFT-T CBC Business of Broadcasting Mentorship. She’s been a key leader on The Defector production team and we’re proud to hear she is the recipient of this coveted position which includes meetings with CBC executive and a week-long program in February 2012. Fathom Film Group welcomes CMPA Telefilm Producer Trainee

Fathom Film Group welcomes Heidi Tao Yang to THE DEFECTOR as a producer trainee, thanks to the latest mentoring effort by the Canadian Media Production Association (CMPA) in partnership with Telefilm Canada.

The Telefilm producer trainee program targets emerging and mid-level producers from a visible minority or aboriginal background.

Heidi earned a Bachelor of Commerce at Ryerson University, studied Film and Television Production at Humber College, and in 2008, she was invited to the Producer’s Lab at the renowned Canadian Film Centre. Heidi has produced over nine globe traveling, award winning short films, has worked in feature films, television series, and has supervised 30 hours of documentary television.

Rogers Documentary Fund backs THE DEFECTOR

The Rogers Documentary Fund, operated by Rogers Documentary and Cable Network Fund, has awarded $1.6 million in grants to 25 doc projects, in a move that it is calling “an unprecedented show of support for independent documentary producers.”

Among the 42 docs receiving funding from the Rogers Documentary Fund in 2011 is THE DEFECTOR: Escape from North Korea.

Canada Media Fund backs ‘The Defector’

Feature documentary and cross-platform project, The Defector: Escape from North Korea, was selected for POV funding from the Canada Media Fund. Thank you for your continued support and interest which has helped us get this ambitious project up and running with upcoming shoots in Los Angeles, Chicago, Toronto, and Asia. We will be working closely with aid workers and several others as refugees embark on a perilous journey to freedom. You’ll be able to follow us as we film via our blog, Kickstarter campaign and Facebook/Google Earth application where you’ll see our stories and are invited to upload your own stories/photos/footage about escaping from other countries. This all begins in September 2011, we’ll keep you posted!

We’re getting ready to go to Sheffield Doc Fest to meet with broadcasters and distributors at the Meetmarket. Here’s the latest trailer for our ongoing film and interactive web project that follows the epic journey of ‘Kim’ and friends out of North Korea. This documentary shows the heroic work done by an underground network of aid workers who help North Korean refugees in a number of countries. It also follows Kim’s journey through several Asian countries as she finds her way to freedom.

We’ve been busy – at Hotdocs, DocXchange, and finishing off 2 new trailers for Pyongyang Express. Here’s one of them for you to watch. This is the demo reel for the Interactive Website we’ve been developing, it’s related to the Pyongyang Express the film.

The Pyongyang Express Interactive Website lets you find out what it’s like to try to escape from North Korea. You walk in the shoes of a North Korean refugee and try to find your way across China and into South-East Asia. Hopefully, you’ll be one of the lucky ones who makes it to a Western country. With gorgeous 3D graphics in full 360° environments, this website will be a fully immersive interactive experience.
